Back in August we began accepting applications to our Creative Bursary Scheme. By the closing date on the 6th October we’d received over 60 applications. After meticulously reading and assessing the applications the tutors at the School of Stitched Textiles have now shortlisted the applications down to 8 students; four have been selected for our Skills Stage 2 courses and four for our Skill Stage 3 courses.
Lets take a look at the entries and meet the students.
Bursary Finalists In Category 1 (Skill Stage 2 Courses)
Emily Goate (Hand Embroidery)
At just 14 years of age Emily has already accomplished so much with her embroidery and shows a great deal of creativity. Emily is determined to study art and make a career out of her passion for hand embroidery and sewing.
Claire Una Frampton (Hand Embroidery)
Claire is a gallery attendant with an interest in theatre, museums and sewing. With a little experience of making gifts for friends and family Claire is now hoping to develop her skills, extend her knowledge, and eventually sell her creations.
Morven Jones (Felting)
Morven studied Textile Design, Costume and Conservation at university, but put her career on hold to raise her family. She has never given up on her passion for creating things and has always gravitated towards textiles in the hope to become a full time textiles artist.
Zoe Wilkinson (Hand Embroidery)
Zoe is a volunteer sewing teacher to adults with learning disabilities. Zoe is hoping that the course will help her develop her sewing skills and go on to teach and exhibit her art. She is interested in upcycling, people, urban landscapes and Maori artwork.
Bursary Finalists In Category 2 (Skill Stage 3 Courses)
Sally-Ann Duffy (Hand Embroidery)
Sally-Ann is a self-confessed ‘serial crafter’ with a passion for hand embroidery. After a series of difficult family events over the past few years Sally-Ann now wants to push her creativity further as this has become a vital part of her self-development, resilience, well-being and positive mental health, and hopes that it will lead to a new career in teaching, to help and inspire others.
Kellyann Horsburgh (Textiles)
Despite suffering from the neurological condition Fibromyalgia, Kellyann has recently completed a degree in Costume Design. She now wants the opportunity to study Textiles so that she can enhance her skills and continue to find solace in her craft.
Jennifer Ann Lewis (Machine Embroidery)
Jennifer used to own a patchwork shop and run a small patchwork group on the Isle of Skye. Now retired, Jennifer is hoping that the course will give her the opportunity to be more creative and experimental so that she can begin exhibiting and selling her work.
Hazel-Anne Maree (Machine Embroidery)
For the past 5 years Hazel-Anne has been caring for her mother who was suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. She has always dreamed of completing a course with the SST to become a master crafter and sell her own exquisite garments. She hopes the course will provide her with new skills and a sense of direction.
Now, we need your help choosing our worthy winners. Simply vote for your favourite here and the person with the most votes and the runners up from both categories will all receive a place on their chosen course.
We’d like to thank everyone who entered – we were really blown away with the amount of applications and the high standards this year, and we wish our finalist the best of luck.
Winners will be announced by 17th October.
