Course Details

This course consists of 12 modules which focus on getting students to develop their own style and designs, while giving students valuable professional practice. As a City and Guilds accredited course, this is a comprehensive online crochet course. It is nationally recognised for its high standards of teaching, learning and assessment.  

Not only will you be taught essential techniques, you’ll also enhance your own creativity and design skills.

Course Modules

There are around 360 hours of course content and materials split across 12 modules. Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Research chosen artist
  • Casting on and off
  • Checking and controlling tension
  • Reading a pattern or chart
  • Development of your own portfolio containing your own ideas, designs and experiments
  • Develop more advanced skills like Tunisia and Hairpin Stitch
  • Study of Wool and Cotton fibres
  • Advanced techniques like Filet crochet and crochet in the round
  • Learn how to create motifs
  • Get proficient at increasing and decreasing stitches
  • Learn how to shape structures
  • Explore how to incorporate embroidery techniques
  • How to create multi-coloured designs
  • How to colour fibres and fabrics
  • Create your own designer folio
  • Finishing techniques: create your own buttons, braids, cords, tassels and decorative edging
  • Creation of 3 assessment pieces
  • Gain professional practice: Business planning and working to commission

Delivery & Assessment

The course is supplied as a distance learning course where course materials and tutor assessments are delivered digitally and work is returned to your tutor via digital presentation.

Your coursework will be reviewed by your tutor and periodically by an Internal Quality Assessor, to ensure the appropriate quality standard is maintained. You will be provided with written feedback in a timely fashion (usually within 10 days) and, if needed, you will be able to re-submit altered work. You can contact your tutor at any time to request your work to date be reviewed and suggestions for future progress be made.

Course Timescales

There is around 360 hours of course content/materials and it is usual for students to take between 6-8 weeks to complete each module. Students can take up to 2 years to complete, however it is up to the individual student how quickly they wish to return work to their tutor for assessment.

A six-month contingency is available, to cover unforeseen issues such as illness, upon production of supporting documentation,  extending the course life to 30 months (2.5 years). The maximum for this extra contingency time is once during the course lifetime.

Aimed At

This course is aimed at crocheters with a bit more crocheting experience.  If you’re regularly completing projects using commercial patterns or kits and you have a fair, though not extensive understanding of different stitch techniques, we’d categorise you as having more experience than a beginner.

If you’ve been interested in crochet for a while, attended a workshop or course and regularly read around your craft (magazines, books, articles) then you’re probably ready to take these more advanced courses. The reason we say this is because our Skill Stage three courses are in-depth courses that require you to research, read and study your subject. We will obviously support you with tasks but some students may find this difficult without previous knowledge and experience of more formal education.

Our skill Stage 3 courses are also great for those with a business ambition.  This crochet course includes an entire module called professional practise, which is aimed at getting you business ready. We teach valuable industry skills to really give you that professional, competitive edge.

Although previous experience isn’t a requirement for the course some students may find it a little more challenging that our Skill Stage 2 course as there are more modules to complete.  If you’re interested in getting to grips with the basics, gaining an in-depth knowledge about Crochet with valuable exposure to professional practice, such as creating a CV and presentation skills then this is the perfect course for you.
